Sleep FAQ
A Sleep Study provides information that will help diagnose problems with your sleep that may also be affecting your overall health. It requires overnight monitoring by professional staff and is performed by using several monitoring devices to collect information on how your body acts while you sleep. The information collected includes brain activity, heartbeats, breathing movement and muscle activity. A report is then compiled to help your physician understand your sleep, diagnose possible sleep disorders and provide treatment options and information for better health.
At Emery Medical Solutions, we take pride in offering you the different types of Sleep Studies that are performed in our state-of-the-art Sleep Lab. A brief description of each Sleep Study is listed below.
The Diagnostic Polysomnogram
A Diagnostic Polysomnogram or Diagnostic Sleep Study is used to evaluate sleep stages and assist with the diagnosis of sleep disorders such as Insomnia, Sleep Apnea and Restless Legs Syndrome.
The Therapeutic Polysomnogram
A Therapeutic Polysomnogram or Therapeutic Sleep Study monitors your sleep while you are on therapy to determine the effectiveness and/or successful treatment of your diagnosed sleep disorder. A common therapy is Positive Airway Pressure or PAP therapy which is used for the treatment of Sleep Apnea.
The Split Polysomnogram
A Split Polysomnogram or Split Sleep Study combines the 2 previously described Sleep Studies. The Diagnostic part is done for 2 hours and then PAP is started for the remainder of the study.
The Multiple Sleep Latency Test
A Multiple Sleep Latency Test or MSLT is done as a series of naps and is used to assess daytime sleepiness and to diagnose or rule out Narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is another sleep disorder that generally involves excessive sleepiness, a sudden loss of muscle tone, sleep paralysis, hallucinations and an abnormal tendency to pass directly from wakefulness into REM sleep.
The Maintenance of Wakefulness Test
A Maintenance of Wakefulness Test or MWT is used to measure the level of alertness you have during the day. It shows whether or not you are able to stay awake for a defined period of time.
